A SWOT analysis is a strategic planning tool used to identify and evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or business venture. Business with Wisdom believes this is a foundational tool and it comes with nearly all of our packages in one form!

Here’s how to conduct a SWOT analysis:

Get Clear:

  1. Identify the Objective: Clearly define the objective or focus of the analysis. It could be a business, a project, a product, or any other initiative.
  2. Gather Information: Collect relevant data and information related to the objective. This could include internal factors such as company resources, capabilities, and performance, as well as external factors such as market trends, competition, and regulatory environment.

Ge Focused:

  1. Identify Strengths:
    • Evaluate internal factors that give the entity an advantage over others.
    • Consider aspects such as unique selling propositions, strong brand reputation, skilled workforce, proprietary technology or intellectual property, efficient processes, financial stability, etc.
  2. Identify Weaknesses:
    • Evaluate internal factors that could be detrimental to the entity’s success.
    • Consider areas such as lack of resources, outdated technology, poor brand reputation, inefficient processes, high debt levels, inadequate skills or expertise, etc.
  3. Identify Opportunities:
    • Evaluate external factors that could be leveraged to the entity’s advantage.
    • Consider emerging market trends, changes in consumer behavior, technological advancements, expanding market segments, regulatory changes, partnerships or collaborations, etc.
  4. Identify Threats:
    • Evaluate external factors that could pose challenges or risks to the entity.
    • Consider factors such as intense competition, economic downturns, changing consumer preferences, regulatory constraints, technological disruptions, supplier or vendor issues, geopolitical instability, etc.
  5. SWOT Matrix:
    • Create a SWOT matrix to visually represent the analysis. Divide a sheet of paper or a digital document into four quadrants and list the identified strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in their respective quadrants.

Get Going:

  1. Analysis and Action Plan:
    • Analyze the findings of the SWOT analysis to identify strategic insights and implications.
    • Develop an action plan to capitalize on strengths, address weaknesses, exploit opportunities, and mitigate threats.
    • Prioritize action items based on their potential impact and feasibility of implementation.
  2. Review and Update:
    • Regularly review and update the SWOT analysis to reflect changes in the internal and external environment.
    • Use the updated analysis to adapt and refine the strategic direction of the entity.
